Green Transition Minerals Project

The Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI) launched the Green Transition Minerals Project as an association between various researchers, policy experts, and influential thinkers to help develop the policies and alliances that will allow African countries to benefit from the global energy transition. In conjunction with the local governments and civil societies of the participating nations, this project addresses problems and develops context-specific solutions.

Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance

The Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance (PCMA) is a membership-driven initiative led by the Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) for various organisations and communities that are interested in tracking the implications of increased extraction of critical minerals and other value-addition activities impacting communities and nature. Through mobilisation and the promotion of African communities and organisations, the PMCA aims to prevent a Green Curse from materialising across the continent.

The Critical Minerals Africa Group

The Critical Minerals Africa Group (CMAG) was established on the 7th of November 2024 by various stakeholders in the critical minerals industry, with the purpose of enhancing the relationships between Africa and global markets and empowering African companies in the critical mineral sector. They aim to facilitate the development of robust and diverse critical mineral supply chains that benefit the communities in which critical minerals are extracted and accelerate development by integrating value-adding operations.

African Minerals Strategy Group

The African Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) is an intergovernmental organisation who primary objective is to facilitate international cooperation in the minerals and mining industry. This organisation seeks to advance exploration, extraction, production, local beneficiation, and commercialisation to ensure the sustainable, transparent, and reliable supply of critical minerals.

SELECTED INITIATIVES

Council for Critical Minerals Development in the Global South

The organisation is a collaborative association between Sustainable Energy For All (SEforAll), the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), and Swaniti Global with the aim of establishing a platform that encourages international and South-South cooperation on the development of critical minerals in the Global South to ensure an equitable energy transition. This platform supports collaboration among nations in developing industries that further industrialisation and socioeconomic development goals.

Mineral Security Partnership

The MSP is a collaboration of 13 countries and the EU to catalyze public and private investment in responsible critical minerals supply chains globally. MSP partners include Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union (represented by the European Commission).

The Africa Center’s Critical Minerals Task Force

On the 7th of February 2024, during the thirteenth annual Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town, South Africa, the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center, in collaboration with Aiteo Group, established its Critical Minerals Task Force. The Task Force is a premier platform for investigation, conversation, and briefings on the developing critical mineral collaboration between the United States (US) and various African nations.

Fair Cobalt Alliance

The Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA) is a multi-stakeholder action platform that was established in 2020 with the ambition of mobilising resources across the cobalt supply chain to provide technical assistance and investment in order to accomplish the goal of a formal, equitable, and secure artisanal and small-scale mining cobalt mining sector. This initiative aims to transform the cobalt artisanal and small-scale mining industry to have a positive impact on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by addressing the underlying causes of child labour and dangerous operations at mining sites.

AfricaMaVal

AfricaMaVal is a 42-month project gathering 18 partners from 11 countries. It is coordinated by BRGM, the French Geological Survey. The consortium gathers African and European experienced organisations, associations, and networks deeply anchored and involved in the raw material domain with specific expertise, and knowledge.
